The most substantial difference is a button dedicated to « special » attack activation, and it resembles Smash Bros. Think of the modern control option (as opposed to the game’s other option, a familiar, six-button « classic » mode) as a way to play SF6 with « macro » button command chains built in.

New, optional “modern” controls: Dumbed down yet cleverĭespite being a pretty lusy fighting game player, I found I was immediately able to hold my own against my earliest opponents. These all appear to be subject to change.īut the most crucial stuff-the delirious fun that made me want to cancel all of my other appointments at an in-person Summer Game Fest event and play more street fighter 6-already feels locked in. I’ll do my best to share what I’ve learned so far about SF6‘s myriad of systems, particularly the « drive » abilities that gather prior games’ coolest mechanics into a « greatest movement hits » gumbo. I can already imagine where the devs will focus efforts like damage balancing, recovery windows, and other numerical tweaks. And its strategies and moment-to-moment gameplay come with clearer consequences and learning opportunities than I’ve ever seen in a Capcom fighter.Īs the version I played was quite early, with only four playable characters, I’m left with the impression that Capcom still has some fine-tuning to do. LOS ANGELES-After spending two days smacking strangers around in the world’s first playable version of street fighter 6I’m convinced that this is the entry that will bring me, a casual fighting game player, back to the series.Īlready, this « 2023 » fighting game is beautiful. Also check out the New Challengers Discord for new fighters in general. They have great discord communities for learners though, even if they're a bit elitist. But buy anime games if you're interested in anime games, they're great too! Just harder to grasp for most at first. Tl dr Great starting point for someone who never plays fighters. If you play Smash you might just be happy to have another close community to join and are used to being abandoned by your developer. If you play games like Overwatch or Dota 2 it might be jarring to be mistreated by a developer. If you play games like CS:GO or PUBG you'll feel the familiar sting of a developer who isn't dedicating many resources to improving the game. I'd recommend getting SFV:AE on sale unless you really wanna start ASAP. The other half are really obsessed with the meme of trying to dissuade anyone from getting into SFV and most fighters in general. I'd reckon about half of us are like me and actively seek out newbies to help and introduce into the scene. Online play is active, improving and has a better ranking system than most fighting games, even if it's still as broken as most online games in general.Ĭommunity is okay. I'd still say Third Strike and USF4 are still better games than SFV's current iteration, but when both of those games first came out they were a total drag to play in my unpopular opinion. It's still a fighting game and therefore still difficult.Īs far as huge step back goes, I'd describe it as worse than the final form of its predecessors (sf3, sf4) but started off way better than those two games, and is improving at a similar rate.

Intermediate/advanced players and pro players are still lightyears apart. You have to be consistent and intelligent at the intermediate level if you want to bring out the easy wins. You can't just beat newbies by knowing a few tricks or combos because they'll pick it up quickly as well.

Most of the reduced difference in skill is between newbies and intermediate players. Game is a great entry point into fighters due to its high skill-floor Input lag is reduced to within a frame or two of its predecessor
